‘Shazam!’ features a great reference to the Joker, hidden in plain sight.
A recently unearthed Easter egg in Zachary Levi’s Shazam! reveals a cool reference to the Joker’s origin story.
While many fans are eagerly awaiting news about a sequel to Shazam!, one eagle-eyed viewer spotted a brilliant Joker Easter egg in the background of one of the funniest sequences in the Zachary Levi film. Most recently, director David F. Sandberg entertained fans on Instagram with a Shazam! themed jab at Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. Now the newly-discovered reference calls back to the Joker’s iconic origin story involving ACE Chemicals.
A fan on Reddit revealed the Joker Easter egg with a screenshot of the montage where Zachary Levi’s Billy Batson tests all of his abilities in an abandoned building with Freddy Freeman. When Billy’s swinging an axe at his own hand, a tank in the background can be seen with the ACE Chemicals logo printed on it. As the Reddit user rightly recognized, it references Detective Comics #168 when the Red Hood leapt into the chemical vat which bleached his skin and turned his hair green, transforming into the infamous Clown Prince of Crime. Take a look at the Shazam! Joker Easter egg below.

Here is the synopsis for the first Shazam! movie:
We all have a superhero inside us, it just takes a bit of magic to bring it out. In Billy Batson’s (Angel) case, by shouting out one word—SHAZAM!—this streetwise 14-year-old foster kid can turn into the adult Super Hero Shazam (Levi), courtesy of an ancient wizard. Still a kid at heart—inside a ripped, godlike body—Shazam revels in this adult version of himself by doing what any teen would do with superpowers: have fun with them! Can he fly? Does he have X-ray vision? Can he shoot lightning out of his hands? Can he skip his social studies test? Shazam sets out to test the limits of his abilities with the joyful recklessness of a child. But he’ll need to master these powers quick.
Directed by David F. Sandberg, the film stars Zachary Levi, Asher Angel, Mark Strong, Jack Dylan Grazer, Grace Fulton, Faithe Herman, Ian Chen, Jovan Armand, Cooper Andrews, Marta Milans and Djimon Hounsou.
Shazam! is now available on Digital HD, 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray, and DVD. Stay tuned to Heroic Hollywood for the latest news on the Shazam! sequel as we learn it. You can also subscribe to our YouTube channel for more content in the future!
