The Best L-Mount Lenses for 2021

When you’re buying a camera with interchangeable lenses, you’re also buying into a lens system. For many, that means optics from the same manufacturer as your camera, supplemented via third parties. The L-Mount mirrorless system is a bit different—while it was started by Leica alone, it’s been joined by Panasonic and Sigma. Together, the three make up the L-Mount Alliance.

This brand diversity has already delivered some niche cameras that you won’t find for other systems. The Leica SL2 is pure German engineering, with stunning industrial design to match, while the Sigma fp is the absolute smallest full-frame mirrorless camera out there. Panasonic has the mainstream covered with crowd-pleasing S5, and video pros can look to the S1H and roll video at 6K quality.

You also get access to three design philosophies when it comes to glass. Leica concentrates on premium primes, Sigma’s wares run the gamut from value to exotic options that open to F1.2, and Panasonic has concentrated on more mainstream entries—the basics are all covered, and you can mix and match to your heart’s content.

We’re here to break down the lenses available for the system. Most are full-frame, and designed for just for the system. There are some APS-C options, and Sigma also sells some of its older SLR lens designs for L-mount—we’ve broken them off separately.
