masthead to see who we are, and what we do.
Sony hasn’t yet announced PS5 pricing but it’s currently accepting sign-ups for a limited pre-order phase. Top retailers, from Walmart to Amazon, are also ready to take your money when the time comes.
Despite the global supply chain and retail challenges presented by COVID-19, Sony is still on track to release the PlayStation 5 in time for the 2020 holiday season.
After months of teases, we finally got a look at the PS5 hardware in June, and depending on who you ask, it’s either a sleek console or reminiscent of a router. What really counts is how it handles games, though, and the PS5 will be sold in two forms: a standard version; and a “digital edition” that nixes the 4K Blu-ray disc player.
PCMag’s Will Greenwald is not in favor of the digital-only version, in part because he likes having a physical game library, but also because today’s top games eat up a lot of space. You’ll have to decide for yourself if having an Ultra HD Blu-ray drive is worth the extra money.
How much money is unclear. Sony hasn’t announced pricing yet. We also don’t have a firm launch date, though Sony is currently accepting sign-ups for a limited pre-order phase. When full details are made available, top retailers are ready to take your money. For now, some stores will let you submit your email address to be notified when pre-orders begin. Here’s a rundown of where you’ll be able to pre-order the PS5.
Sony this week added a new page to the official PlayStation website, which invites “some of our existing consumers to be one of the first to pre-order one from PlayStation.”
You’ll need to enter your PlayStation Online ID, and Sony will contact people via email with details if they’re selected. Sony will consider “previous interests and PlayStation activities” when choosing people. “If you do not receive an email, you were not selected,” Sony says.
Signing up and receiving an invite does not lock you into a purchase, but Sony will limit how many consoles and accessories you can buy:
1 PS5 Console or 1 PS5 Digital Edition
2 DualSense wireless controllers
2 DualSense charging stations
2 Pulse 3D wireless headsets
2 Media remotes
2 HD Cameras
Sony cautions it will have “a limited quantity of PS5 consoles available for pre-order,” but does not specify how many that might be. It will also only be accepting orders for the US at first; “any orders that contain a non-US based address will be cancelled,” Sony says.
On Best Buy, you can sign up to be notified when the PS5 goes on sale.
GameStop will also take your email and notify you when PS5 pre-orders are live.
