Exclusive: Julia Scotti Revisits Her Old Stand-Up With a New Perspective in “Funny That Way” Clip

“Julia Scotti: Funny That Way”

Transgender folks are still having to deal with cis people’s fixation on which bathroom they use. “They’re freaking out about my pee,” says Julia Scotti in our exclusive clip of “Julia Scotti: Funny That Way.” The stand-up explains, “My pee is, like, radioactive, man. They even made a law about it. You can’t mix transgender pee with normal pee — it gets in the water system.”

Decades ago, Julia Scotti performed as Rick Scotti, and she was using her platform to share very different kinds of messages. In another exclusive clip from the doc, we see Julia revisiting a cringe-inducing moment from her past. “Did you see ‘Geraldo’ a couple weeks ago when they had these transsexuals on?” the comic asks on-stage. “First they were ugly guys and now they’re ugly women.” “Shut up! Shut up!” Scotti begs as she watches footage from the old set.

“Julia Scotti: Funny That Way” sees Scotti returning to stand-up after a long hiatus. The documentary is directed by Susan Sandler (“Crossing Delancey”) and will screen virtually for one night only at the Bentonville Film Festival on August 14 at 8 p.m. Central / 9 p.m. ET. The film will be followed by a live Q&A with Scotti and Sandler.
