Avengers: Endgame directors, The Russo Brothers have defended the use of CGI in the film’s epic final battle.
Anyone who looks at any of the behind the scenes video and/or images for any Marvel Cinematic Universe can probably tell that the studio like to use a lot of CGI for its films. The Russo Brothers films, in particular, have a way of using CGI in ways that would fool anyone but might also seem excessive to others. For example, there are many shots in the film where Captain America’s mask is CGI. For certain sequences, however, CGI is extremely necessary in order to make a film on any practical terms.
While speaking to Fox 5, The Russo Brothers discussed the climax of Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame and with Joe Russo discussing how the use of CGI made the production of these films far more efficient:
“You know, CGI makes things more efficient. So, we could make Infinity War and Endgame back-to-back. If we had to make those two movies in that way, they would have been four years apart, easily.”
Anthony Russo then continued by saying that the use of CGI had different strengths and weaknesses depending on the characters and what they are doing:
“There is a big difference too, because CG has certain strengths, right? Part of the reason why it works so well in Star Wars, in general, is that when you’re dealing with ships and creatures, non-human forms, and machines it does a little better. When you’re dealing with the human form, you can see its weaknesses. The virtue of the characters in the Avengers films are that they’re not, you know… Captain America doesn’t fly a spaceship or a fighter jet. You know? If you’re dealing with the human body and that stuff is much more difficult to achieve in visual effects at a visual effects level. You have to use the tools different tools depending on what the action is and what the storytelling is. Because of that, I believe the two are very different from one another and how you approach them.”
What do you all make of the Russo Brothers’ words? Do you think the final battle of Avengers: Endgame could have been done without the use of CGI? Let us know what you think in the comments below!
